Board of Directors – Member at Large

Authority and Responsibility

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Langley Community Farmers’ Market Society (the Society). As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.

  • Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: Policy, finance, programs, personnel, and advocacy
  • Willingness to serve on committees
  • Attendance at monthly board meetings
  • Attendance at meetings of assigned committees
  • Attendance at Annual General Meetings
  • Attendance at Membership Meetings
  • Attendance, when possible, at the Langley Community Farmer’s Market
  • Support of special events
  • Support of, and participation in, fundraising initiatives
  • Financial Support of the Langley Community Farmer’s Market

General Duties of all Board of Members

A Director is fully informed on organizational matters, and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy. The Director must exercise due diligence as they:

  • Over seeing the strategic planning of the Langley Community Farmer’s Market, and ensure the organizations mission, vision, and goals are being reached
  • Management of the LCFM Executive Director, and LCFM Market Manager
  • Approve, where appropriate, policy and other recommendations received from the Board, standing committees and market management.
  • Monitor all Board policies
  • Review the Board’s structure, approve changes, and prepare necessary bylaw amendments
  • Participate in the development of the Society’s organizational plan and annual review.
  • Approve the Society’s budget.
  • Approve the hiring and release of the market manager, including the manager’s employment contract, based on the recommendation of the Personnel Committee.
  • Support and participate in evaluating the market manager.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the Board, committees, management, and community to enhance Society’s mission.


The Board will undertake an annual self-evaluation


Directors are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Directors serve for a three-year term. Directors may be released at the end of the elected term, by resigning, or according to the bylaws of the Society. Directors may serve no more than two consecutive terms before stepping down.
